A career combining science, energy and entrepreneurship
Originally from Porto, Portugal, Telmo da Silva Lopes is a chemical engineer pursuing a PhD in environmental engineering focused on solar storage through photoelectrochemistry, with expertise in semiconductors, thin coatings, renewable gases and energy systems for buildings. A stint at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU Eindhoven) steered his career towards renewable energy. Alongside his academic work, he co-founded a start-up in renewable gases, an experience that now feeds into his mission to bring technologies from the laboratory to market at the Brightlands Materials Centre.
based at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, in the south of the Netherlands, the BMC develops innovative materials for a circular, low-carbon economy, with three areas of application: sustainable buildings, mobility and circular packaging. The centre operates collaborative programmes, from prototyping to pre-industrialisation, in close collaboration with industry and universities.
