Bambu Lab (Shenzhen, China) has launched the X2D, a desktop 3D printer built around a dual-nozzle extrusion system designed to reduce postprocessing on complex prints. The printer’s material compatibility list includes carbon and glass fiber-filled filaments, positioning it as a candidate for makers and small-batch producers working with reinforced polymers.
The X2D’s dual-nozzle system uses mechanical, motor-free switching between two independently fed toolheads: a direct-drive primary nozzle for structural material and a Bowden-fed auxiliary nozzle intended mainly for support material. The company says the mechanism completed more than 1 million switch cycles during life cycle testing without loss of smooth operation.
The printer’s chamber can be actively heated to 65°C while the nozzle reaches 300°C, a combination the company says is intended to reduce warping and improve layer adhesion when printing engineering-grade materials such as ABS, ASA and nylon. According to a testing review made by PCMag.org, “testing showed excellent precision [±0.05-mm tolerances], strong bridging performance and reliable results with engineering materials including carbon fiber/polycarbonate.” According to Bambu Lab’s filament compatibility guidance, PLA-CF and PLA-GF are listed as recommended materials for the system, while PETG-CF, ASA-CF and PAG-CF are listed under a “print with caution” category.
