Sound Bounce is a smart acoustic material for use in the automotive, aerospace, construction, and power generation industries. It provides a cost-effective way of absorbing harmful or unwanted noise, protecting people and structures. The capital awarded by the EU will be used to complete the commercialisation of the SoundBounce technology, launching it on a global scale across the construction, automotive, power generation, and aerospace industries where loud noise is a significant challenge.
These industries are facing increasingly stringent regulations from the EU and beyond as a result of increased noise pollution and consumer demand for quieter products. The SoundBounce material is designed to help deal with these issues, and the repercussions noise pollution has for human health, our wellbeing, and the environment.
The Dublin-based company was one of the 2018 winners at the JEC StartUp Booster competition. One of the largest international composite competitions, this international program draws together innovation, entrepreneurship, and composites and provides a global platform for materials startups.
SoundBounce’s chief executive Rhona Togher said:“There is a major opportunity for new solutions in the acoustics space as it has been technologically stagnant for decades. This funding from Horizon 2020 enables us to complete the scale-up and industrialisation of the technologies – building it into the next generation of cars, buildings, and planes.”
The company has also expanded its workforce in preparation, with 18 jobs planned at its Dublin headquarters in areas such as project management, predictive modelling, business development, acoustics, and material science. SoundBounce is also working with a number of academic institutions and labs, including Trinity College Dublin and the University of Limerick, to work on refining the acoustic metamaterials.
How it's work?
SoundBounce is a game changing acoustic material. In comparison to the most widely used acoustic materials, it has been independently tested to absorb noise up to 1000 times more effectively at low frequencies and 100 times at other frequencies. It’s 3 times thinner and it can be deployed in many operational environments.
The material can be configured to attenuate specific frequencies of sound, such as low frequency noise. The system is comprised of two parts – an interior smart material and a cellular housing. SoundBounce uses low cost advanced materials within an enabling patented cellular structure for the effective attenuation of noise. The unique, non-linear physics of the SoundBounce material enable a vastly improved acoustic performance.
You can see here from independent testing the vastly improved performance of SoundBounce when compared with the most widely used acoustic materials. A 30 decibel improvement at the low frequencies corresponds to a 1000 times reduction in sound.
