An announcement by Bloomberg News reports that Siemens Energy (Munich, Germany) is looking ahead to introducing a 21-megawatt (MW) wind turbine by the end of the decade, its largest to date. Bloomberg believes that this could renew a race among companies for larger turbines, which “has stalled in recent years due to supply chain squeezes and poor financial performance of many western turbine makers.”

RenewBiz.com notes that the company had previously received €30 million in EU funding for the HIPPOW project to test “the world’s most powerful wind turbine prototype” at the National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines at Osterild, Denmark, though no details on its size or commercialization timing have been released.

Several sources acknowledge installation of an 18-MW offshore wind turbine with a 260-meter rotor diameter by Chinese manufacturer Dongfang Electric Corp. in Guangdong, and MingYang Smart Energy, also in Guandong, and its announced offshore MySE 18.X-28X model featuring 140-meter-long blades last year.
