Core tips:BlueWind, a company specialising in producing high-performance composites, announces a contract with GE Vernova to manufacture the WT20 wind turbine nacelle cover.
Since the partnership between the two companies began at the end of 2019, BlueWind has delivered more than 2,000 units of the 2X nacelle cover and is now preparing to manufacture the WT20 model, which is more robust and has a higher power generation potential, ranging from 3 MW to 3.8 MW.
According to Jean Zolet, CEO of BlueWind, the main difference between this new project and the previous one is the increased robustness of the nacelle cover. “The new WT20 model has thicker panels and more internally mounted metal items, such as rails, to facilitate maintenance. In addition, it is 1 meter longer than the previous version,” explains Zolet. He estimates that BlueWind will produce 1,000 nacelle covers for the 2X and WT20 over the next year.
Carlos Sinhori, Industrial Director at BlueWind, highlights that, although the materials used in the laminate, such as the PET core, remain the same, the new nacelle cover has more layers of fabric, which provides more excellent resistance to the laminate. “The manufacturing process continues to be infusion, maintaining the efficiency already known from our production line.”
Driven by the new business with GE and prospects for other potential customers in the wind energy market, BlueWind recently invested US$ 3 million in its industrial structure.
“We acquired new equipment, including CNC lines, fiberglass cutting machines, and silicone injection molding machines,” explains Sinhori. The expansion also involved increasing the team. By the first half of 2025, BlueWind intends to double the number of employees, totaling 300.
To Henry Kelley, Co-Founder and Chairman of BlueWind, the production of WT20 nacelle cover will bring cutting-edge advancements to the company´s production capabilities and create new job opportunities. “We are committed to driving the future of renewable energy and expanding our team.”
