China’s Mingyang hoisted its self-developed MySE18.X-20MW, a wind turbine that boasts a maximum power of 20 MW.

China’s Mingyang hoisted its self-developed MySE18.X-20MW, introduced by the company with the characteristics of  “modularisation, lightweight, high efficiency and high reliability.”  It boasts a maximum power of 20 MW, a wind wheel diameter that can cover 260-292 metres, and a maximum swept area of 67 square metres, which is equivalent to the size of 9 football fields.

According to Mingyang, the research and development of the turbine has enabled the localisation of all key components including blades, gearboxes, generators, pitch systems to large castings and control systems. The company says that the MySE18.X-20MW relies on Mingyang Intelligent’s operating experience of more than 2,600 typhoon-resistant units and adopts active anti-typhoon technology to withstand Category 17 typhoons.

Mingyang Intelligent has also given the MySE18.X-20MW unit “new skills” with low-frequency grid connection technology. based on this technology, the MySE18.X-20MW can directly produce low-frequency alternating current, which can effectively improve the power transmission capacity, power transmission distance and transmission capacity of the wind farm, thereby effectively solving the problems of high cost and low energy efficiency of large-scale long-distance electricity transmission. The application of this technology aims to help Mingyang’s large-megawatt offshore units move into the deep  sea.

The MySE18.X-20MW unit is not only suitable for China’s medium-to-high wind speed and typhoon areas but can also be used in Europe and other international high-wind speed areas. According to Mingyang, since the unit was released and developed, it has been widely recognised by customers and has won the bid for batch projects. The selection of MySE18.X-20MW units for these batch projects marks that China’s offshore wind power has officially entered the 20MW era.

From the MySE 3.0MW offshore model used in the first offshore wind power project in Guangdong province in 2015 to the MySE5.5-7.0MW, the typhoon-resistant wind power platform with the largest rotor diameter, in 2017; then in 2019, the single-machine capacity semi-direct drive typhoon-resistant offshore model MySE8-10MW, followed in 2022 by the MySE12MW and then in 2023 by the MySE16MW, Mingyang put into operation all these units one after another and once again showed with the hoisting of the MySE18.X-20MW its commitment to improving the utilisation of regional wind resources through large-scale offshore units and promoting the development of wind power.

Today, Mingyang wind turbines are not only distributed in many Chinese provinces such as Guangdong, Fujian, Shandong, Guangxi, Jiangsu, Hainan, Hebei, Liaoning but also go abroad to several sea areas from countries including Italy, Japan, Vietnam and Norway. Composite materials are used to make wind turbines.
