Core tips:On 24 April, Safran Landing Systems officially opened a new centre dedicated to engineering activities and support functions at its site in Gloucester (United Kingdom). This investment will enhance the company’s ability to design and develop the next gene
With the opening of its new engineering and support centre, Safran Landing Systems continues to make history in Gloucester, upholding the legacy of George Dowty, the English inventor and industrialist renowned for his pioneering aviation designs. First established in 1937, the site has since undergone multiple transformations, including the merger with Messier and Bugatti, two companies that helped to consolidate our expertise in the field of landing systems. Today, the Gloucester site hosts a number of Safran Landing Systems flagship activities, including landing gear design, manufacturing and assembly, as well as MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) services.
The plant’s 1,200 highly skilled employees contribute to major aviation programs, such as the Airbus A320 and A350, and support strategic defense programs such as the Eurofighter (Typhoon) and the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP).

Facing the future
This new building aims to promote the plant’s operational excellence and competitiveness in a global market, as expressed by François Bastin at the opening ceremony: “
This building will be instrumental to the design and development of the next generation of landing systems. This investment is not only a great opportunity for our employees and a boost for the regional economy, but also a sign of our commitment to the long-term future of the aviation sector
,” he says.
Providing a sustainable, high-quality work environment for our teams is another key aspect. In 2024, more than 200 new employees joined the Gloucester site, with special efforts being devoted not only to dedicated apprenticeship and onboarding programs, but also to well-being at work. The centre has been designed to offer modern, pleasant working environments. It includes relaxation areas and facilities to enhance workplace quality of life, demonstrates genuine commitment to carbon neutrality, and encourages the use of soft mobility such as cycling!
All this is part of the investment strategy being pursued by Safran Landing Systems to “
give our talented teams the means to excel
“, concludes François Bastin.
