Core tips:The purpose of the new lab is to increase the company’s biodegradability and (eco-)toxicology testing capabilities, accelerating the development of eco-friendly solutions.
Today, 12 June 2025, Syensqo just inaugurated a new, cutting-edge microbiology, (eco-)toxicology and biotechnology lab in Lyon, France. The new facility will reinforce Syensqo’s biodegradation and (eco-)toxicology testing capabilities from the early stages of product development, and facilitate the development of environmentally-friendly and safe products through the company’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform. It is Syensqo’s largest microbiology lab in the world, and the company plans it to be a reference centre in the field.

The new lab – which is 550 m – will benefit from the experience of Syensqo’s other labs, with the goal to improve testing efficiency and reduce time-to-market. The lab – the construction of which resulted in a 35% decrease in net power consumption and a 36% reduction in CO 2  emissions – will be sustainability-oriented. Its advanced capabilities and machine learning enabling it to support the development of biodegradable-by-design solutions, particularly in the beauty care, home care, agrochemical, adhesives and materials markets.

Syensqo also plans its new laboratory to support product registration, first within the company and then outside of it through a service model. It indeed targets GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) accreditation, which is expected in the second half of the yea, and its expertise in evaluating the biodegradability of a wide range of difficult-to-assess products will make this service interesting for customers and partners. The lab is expected to enable a significant increase in biodegradation testing capacity, the number of samples tested being expected to rise by tenfold compared to 2021.

Our new microbiology lab significantly strengthens our capacity to create safe and biodegradable solutions. With advanced testing methods, digital capabilities and increased precision and efficiency, we are accelerating the development of sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers ,” said Thomas Canova, Head of Research and Innovation and Head of Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform at Syensqo.

Biodegradation testing is the process of evaluating how quickly and effectively a substance, such as a chemical or material, can be broken down by microorganisms in the environment. This testing helps determine the environmental impact of a substance by assessing its ability to decompose naturally and safely.
Ecotoxicity testing is the process of evaluating the potential harmful effects of chemicals or substances on ecosystems, including plants, animals, and microorganisms. These tests help determine how a chemical might impact the environment, particularly aquatic and terrestrial life, and are essential for assessing environmental safety and regulatory compliance. Toxicity testing is the process of assessing the potential harmful effects of chemicals or substances on human health. This testing evaluates how exposure to a chemical might affect various bodily systems and helps ensure safety by identifying potential risks to humans.
